Jan 5, 1. Messages: Anyone got any suggestions for an alternative to a Fender Champ? The originals are priced WAY above my budget. I've heard great things about the Victoriabut if I'm going to be realistic, it's prob too expensive. I'm not sure how much actual studio use it really got tho I'm getting off topic tho. I'm mainly interested in recommendations on a Champ clone or kit. I'm comfortable putting a kit together if it's gonna save me money. Adam79Jan 5, Jan 5, 2.Base impaginato 1

Use the drop down boxes above to select the parts you want in the kit, the price may change after specific selections are made. The default kit options are the most popular. Please note: I suggest using this layout as it solves some of the grounding issues that may cause hum by following other layouts.
We do not supply a step by step build manual for this amp, the layout is simple to follow and it is expected that the builder has some relevant experience.
Once you have built the amp you may want to try some simple tweaks to get it sounding the way you want, here is some of our mods we do at Modulus:. Tweed champ Modifications. Need more versatility - check out the Tweed Princetown kit, which is basically the same amp in a bigger chassis and cab, with the addition of a tone control. Plexi 45 - '65 kit - 35w Output. Add to Wishlist Add to Cart.We can help you own your tone with customizations that add new features to your amp or fine-tune its performance. This is included in the "blackfacing" conversion or can be done to many other amps as a separate mod.
Blackfacing: This term refers to the conversion of Fender Silverface SF amps which were built from around to around to the more desirable Blackface BF circuit configuration circa to There are some exceptions, mainly the "ultra-linear" amps which are the 70 watt and watt versions of some models from the late 70's.
Blackface amps were made with a black faceplate and featured the pre CBS circuit design used by Fender before the advent of the silver faceplates. It featured a better bias circuit that allowed for more precise bias settings for your output tubes. Blackface models also had some different value components in various places throughout the amp which resulted in what most players consider to be a better tone. The number of changes varies according to amp model and year.
When we blackface your amp, we change these components, re-bias the amp, and on some amps we make changes to the wiring. These wiring changes are often necessary because some SF amps become somewhat unstable after converting to blackface spec. These changes sometimes caused instability in the amp, which required them to make other circuit changes to offset the new wiring problems.
These circuit changes fixed the instability but adversely affected the tone of the amp.Madden 20 breakout player scenario
This is one of the reasons why blackfacing can improve the sound of your amp. That really depends on the amp being converted. The amps that can benefit the most from this mod are the late '68 through late '69 versions of certain models. These are the amps that gave silverface Fenders a bad name when there were introduced.
Blackfacing these amps results in a more classic Fender tone with better dynamics, more controllable overdrive, extended frequency response, slightly less flabby bass, and clean tones that have a more open and sparkly sound. In addition, the bias circuit will be converted to a standard blackface type that allows for precise adjustment without pulling the amp chassis.
This saves time and money on future output tube replacements. For most Silverface amps not built in the above time period, you still get the bias adjustment mod but the other changes will be a bit subtler.
Basically, the tone will get a bit more harmonic, very slightly more distorted in a good way and bass will be reduced slightly. However, some players may prefer the tone of an unmodified '70s Silverface amp which generally has a really great tone if working properly. Ultra-linear amps can be considerably more and still won't really sound like blackface amps because of the different transformers in these amps. There are still differences in tone for a couple of reasons.Capacitor values have changed slightly over the years due to changing manufacturing standards.
In some cases, 5uF has been replaced with 4. Many 20uF and 25uF have been replaced with 22uF. On Ruby Gold capacitors in our pro kits, the polarity of the capacitor is indicated only by an arrow on the side of the capacitor which points toward the negative end.
On Ruby Gold capacitors, both ends of the capacitor are "dimpled", so you cannot determine polarity that way. Especially in the "silverface" years, the internal designs sometimes do not correspond with the schematic for the particular model version shown on the tube chart.
Always unplug the amplifier from commercial power, and discharge all filter capacitors before working on the amplifier circuitry. If you are unsure about this procedure, we strongly recommend that you leave your amplifier in the care of a professional service person.

The fat, snappy guitar tones heard on many recordings, from Memphis to Abbey Road, were made using the Tweed. The Tweed produces about 15 loud watts into 8 Ohms using two 6V6 output tubes and is housed in a classic Tweed cabinet.
The circuit is based on the original Fender 5E3 Tweed Deluxe. To develop our version of this famous amp, we improved the layout, grounding, isolated the input jacks and therefore reduced noise level. We then had Heyboer make us custom transformers, again to our specifications.
The Power Transformer is improved as well with high current capacity and a ground wire for the heaters to reduce noise. The OT is the Fender design with heavier gauge wire for reliability, 8 and 4 ohm speaker support and again we used old grade steel to our spec.
The redesign also includes a standby switch which is a useful departure from the original.

What differentiates our kits from others is part quality, fit, documentation and support. This is a full kit with custom Heyboer transformers, tubes and vintage chrome chassis printed on both front and rear. We supply quality parts. Most companies charge extra for Switchcraft Jacks, Carling Switches, Carbon Composition resistors and some only provide minimum documentation.Callback url azure
I was recently asked by a family member if I could assemble a Tweed amp kit from Trinity Amplifiers. I love old Fender amps and like to see how various vendors put together their interpretation of the legendary 5E3 Deluxe circuit. Not long after accepting the job I was asked by Trinity if I would document my experience in building their kit. This document covers the whole thing. The kit arrived quite quickly, within a week.
I opened up the surprisingly small package and found everything nicely packed and well organized. The first thing I did was to lay out all the packages and do an inventory.
Before I get too far into it, I should say that this kit came with an extensive set of documents that covered the entire build process from beginning to end. In fact, my usual practice of laying out all the parts was right there in the step-by-step instructions. This is a very important part of the build. You get to see all the parts and determine if anything is missing. I was very impressed that they had bundled all the like components together. Hardware, capacitors, wire, resistors, each in its own package and easy to identify.
Very early in the documentation they give you a list of all the major steps in the build so you have a road map to follow as you go. Each step has the detailed instructions required to complete that step. The order of operations is actually quite important if you want the best chance of success.
One other thing I should mention is that in addition to the build instructions there is a lot of useful reference material available. Most vendors give you all the parts and a picture of the layout for wiring. The chassis, switches, sockets and pots are all excellent. The multi-tap primary power transformer now comes standard, and works with, and wall voltages!
This amp kit also comes with the following documents. Mojotone reserves the right to change or substitute any and all of the parts contained in this amplifier kit without advertisement or notification to the buyer.

How To Build a Tube Amplifier
Tell a Friend. I would suggest using the online instructions as they were better than the ones that my amp shipped with and have somewhat simpler grounding points for some components and gives you a better idea of how long to cut your leads.
I used the included instructions and my amp still works fine. All the parts came well organized in a compartmentalized plastic container which made it easy to find each component. I did have one extra capacitor and was missing one resistor. This is my first traditional tube amp and it sounds great. I turn it up to 6. It sound great for blues. The only issue the amp had was my fault for putting the rectifier tube in wrong.
The fuse saved it, meaning it did its job. I'm a mechanical Engineer with a lot of soldering experience, I used an adjustable soldering station, Weller wes51, I don't think it would be fun to do this with a cheap straight plug in style iron as some of the components are quite large.
If you take your time and check your work as you go you should end up with a pretty nice piece of kit in the end. Name: Mike Rating: 5 Everyone needs to try this at least once So, through the years I have been eyeballing these Mojotone kits. Ever since the early days of Ampwares. I have had quite a few old Fender amps.
As you would expect, they always need upkeep. Luckily, my dad worked as an electrical engineer for a local television station for 30 years, so he thought me how to soldier and he has helped me fix many amps.Vintage Fender Champ Tone - 1971 Fender Champ Amp @ Sunflower and Friends!
I have been kind of learning how to work on amps through him since my early 20s.Large selection for many models from the s up to the present day. Most potentiometer sets for amps in the blackface and silverface era offer a choice of metal shafts or nylon shafts.
Many kits for 60s and 70s models include the resistors which are soldered directly to the pots. Not for reissues. Contains two Switchcraft 12A switched jacks, with nuts, locking washer and trim washer, plus two 68K and one 1 Meg carbon composition resistors. Scratchy, intermittent jacks and bright switch? Pilot light dim, or intermittent? This kit will take care of those problems. Add a Potentiometer Kit for a complete front panel component replacement. Select lamp jewel color in options.
Contains four Switchcraft 12A switched jacks, with nuts, locking washer and trim washer, plus four 68K and two 1 Meg carbon composition resistors. For all models which have both Vibrato and Reverb, and whose back panel looks similar to the one shown below.
Contains two phenolic 8-pin sockets, two "bear trap" retainers, four mounting screws, two ohm screen grid resistors Metal-Film Flameproof for safetyand two carbon composition ohm control grid resistors. Princeton and Princeton Reverb do not need the resistors. Contains four phenolic 8-pin sockets, four "bear trap" retainers, eight mounting screws, four ohm screen grid resistors Metal-Film Flameproof for safetyand four carbon composition ohm control grid resistors.
This would include most all 60s and 70s Fender amps with vibrato except for the Bronco, Vibro-Champ, Princeton, or Princeton Reverb - kit will not work on those models. If you have vibrato problems, changing the vibrato 12AX7 oscillator tube should be the first step 2nd preamp tube away from the power tubes. If that does not solve the problem, changing the components contained in this kit should do the trick. Contains 3 phase shift ceramic disc capacitors, two resistors and one opto-isolator.
